School Bus Weather Alerts

If your child rides the bus to and from school, please be aware that at times pick-up and drop-off might be delayed. Consider signing up for the Textcaster late bus notification system, which alerts families via text when buses are delayed. You can sign up for Textcaster here: https://my.textcaster.com/asa/2795. If you have signed up for Textcaster and have confirmed your sign-up, you will receive a text in the event your child’s bus has been delayed.

Ø  February is Black History Month, today we are highlighting a student's Black History Hero: Claudette Colvin. She was Rosa Parks before Rosa Parks. This happened March 2, 1955. Claudette was only 15 when she got arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus.

Ø  Attention all 7th grade students! Would you be interested in an "all-expenses paid" trip to the Future Astronaut Training Camp at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson this summer? Join the Google Classroom using code shhbrum to find out more about this “out of this world” opportunity! Deadline for submission of applications is Friday, March 6th at 3:45 pm.  Any questions?  See Mrs. Smith in room 116.

Ø  There are lists of students who HAVE purchased a Yearbook posted around the main floor.  If you do NOT see your name on the lists, this means you have NOT purchased a Yearbook.  The cost of the Yearbook is $20.00 and can be purchased from the Bookkeeper  -  deadline to purchase is TOMORROW.  There is NO guarantee that we will have extra yearbooks at the end of the school year, so order now!!

Ø  February is Black History Month, today we are highlighting (pronounced tah nah hawsi) Ta-Nehisi Coates. He is a speaker, an activist, and an award-winning and best-selling author best known for his books Between the World and Me and Marvel's Black Panther which was made into a major motion picture in 2016. He continues to write for Marvel on The Black Panther and Captain America graphic novel series.

Ø  Celebrate Black History Month with African Americans of KC.  Today we celebrate:  Mary Winston Jackson was an African-American mathematics and physical science expert for NASA. She was hired in April 1951 and worked hard until she retired in 1985. Mary Jackson once said, “Sometimes they are not aware of the number of black scientists, and don’t even know of the career opportunities.” Mary Jackson was the first African-American engineer. Mary and along with two others (Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan)  have a movie about them called Hidden Figures, and how those three smart and powerful women helped the early spaceflight.  Mary Jackson died on February 11, 2005, due to natural causes. But, NASA helps keep her story alive.

Celebrate Black History Month with African Americans of KC.  Today we celebrate:  Hiram Revels.  Hiram Rhoades Revels was destined for greatness.  Born in the 1829's (historical accounts vary on the exact year) he fought at the Battle of Vicksburg and served as a chaplain for the Union Army.  And, reportedly at the request of Fredrick Douglas, helped recruit and organize black soldiers during the Civil War.  In Missouri and two other states, Revels was an educator, and in 1865, founded and led St. Paul A.M.E. Church in nearby Independence, MO.  Years later, he also became the first African American U.S. Senator in Mississippi filling the seat vacated by Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.

Ø  NO Drama Club this week due to Parent-teacher conferences!

Ø  Celebrate Black History Month with African Americans of KC.  Today we celebrate:   CHARLIE PARKER  -  Indeed, “Bird Lives” in heart and mind in Kansas City where Charlie “Yardbird” Parker was born in 1920. The music and legacy of this world renowned saxophonist credited with developing the bop jazz style and for his integral role in helping to shape the city’s distinctive jazz sound, is on display as one of four major exhibits at the American Jazz Museum in the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District. At the back of the museum, visitors will also find the Charlie Parker Monument, a striking 17-foot likeness of his head in the shape of African continent.
