Attention Performance 2 Students!  You are called to the MPR at 5pm on Thursday, May 19th to have free pizza and get ready for the Performance 2 final show.

Students on the last day of school we will have an inflatables party from 12:45 – 1:45.  Please make sure you are SOARing this week so you are able to attend.

We will be selling cotton candy for $1 during the inflatables party!  That’s right, bring $1 on the last day of school to buy some cotton candy!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Month:  Dr. Mabel Lee was a Chinese immigrant and women’s suffragist advocate.  Lee was born in China and immigrated to the U.S.  As a teenager, she marched in suffrage parades and wrote essays promoting women’s rights.  Even after the 19th Amendment, Lee herself was unable to vote due to the Chinese Exclusion Act.  In 1921, Mabel became the first Chinese woman to receive a doctorate from Columbia University. She became an author and the Director of a community center.

Band students- Tuesday is last day for instruments.  If yours belongs to the school, it needs to be returned to Mrs. Balsinger, unless you’re renting it for summer

Attention Creative Writing & Performance 1 Students- Ms. Kalahurka’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hour classes will be meeting in the Ms. Houston’s room down the electives hallway. Creative Writing and Performance 1 Classes report to Ms. Houston’s room for 1st, second & third hour. Performance 2 will still meet on the stage in the afternoon.

RECYCLING- We will recycle in the expo-hall today during 5th hour.

Turn in your SIGNED green permission slip and $10.00 to the teachers in the front hallway during Eagle Hour-we will make an announcement for you to come down.  These are due TUESDAY!  Turn them in as soon as you can.

TODAY - May 10th is the date ALL library books will need to be returned in order to avoid being charged for a lost book.  Please set a reminder in your phone to make sure to drop off your book in the library!

Today is our final spring band concert!  Performers will meet at SMN @ 6:30pm to warm up.  Remember to take your instruments and music home after school.  The concert starts at 7pm in the main auditorium of SMN.  It's free and open to the public!  All are invited!

 Congratulations to all candidates who ran for Student Council Offices!   Your Freshman President and Vice President will be Ali'Yonna Funches and Oreofe Oni!  Jayla and Shyla will be asked to represent you as Freshman Reps along with Ana Aquino, Ashley Cid Betancourt, Layla Adcox, Gabreal Clary, Payton Parrett, and Sawyer Manirath.   Hocker Grove President and Vice-President will be Hannah Laipple and Cheraya Comeaux. Talia and Chloe will be asked to represent you as 8th Grade Officers. 

Last day to turn in your green permission slip!  Please bring it down to the front hallway.  If you do not turn in your green permission slip you will be staying in a study hall tomorrow.  If you haven’t turned in your permission slip today – you will need to talk to Mrs. Long today and figure out your plan for tomorrow!

Fee Payment Information

We are asking all parents to pay fees ONLINE this year. 

·         The Online fee payment portal is now open and we appreciate your patience as student schedules are now finalized.    Go to www.smsd.org hover over the “Families” tab and click the link entitled “Pay Fees Online”.  The site can also be found at this link:  https://www.smsd.org/families/pay-fees.   You may also call the Hocker Grove Bookkeeper with Credit Card information to pay fees. 

·         Required fees include:  textbook ($80.00), ID card ($5.00), and Elective Course fees (Art, Humanities, Industrial Tech classes-Robotics, Design & Modeling, Projects) 

·         Optional fees – Student Activity ticket and Yearbook – if a student does not want or need, these will automatically be deleted from the student’s account if it is unpaid at the end of first quarter.  The online system will allow parents the option to not pay these fees. 

·         All payment plans and KanCare 19 can be completed over the phone or email.  KanCare has been applied to many accounts already, so please check fees in Skyward to see if the textbook & ID card fees have been waived.  Please contact our bookkeeper, Michele Dirks for help with this.  micheledirks@smsd.org or 913-993-0220 

·         If you need to pay by check, you will need to go to the pay fees online portal to find out your student fees.  Please make your check payable to Hocker Grove.  Mail your check with your students’ ID number to Hocker Grove, attn: Bookkeeper, 10400 Johnson Dr. Shawnee, KS 66203

 

DS BUS TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION (2021-2022)

Check out the DS Busing website: https://dsbuslines.com/  NEW this year, all students must enroll via DS Bus Lines to receive busing. This includes both pay riders and those that qualify as free riders. Emails will be going out to the families and a link will be shared on DS Bus Lines website as well as the SMSD Transportation webpage.

 

School Bus Weather Alerts

If your child rides the bus to and from school, please be aware that at times pick-up and drop-off might be delayed. Consider signing up for the Textcaster late bus notification system, which alerts families via text when buses are delayed. You can sign up for Textcaster here: https://my.textcaster.com/asa/2795. If you have signed up for Textcaster and have confirmed your sign-up, you will receive a text in the event your child’s bus has been delayed.
